ASSAM FLOOD RELIEF 2022: A Story of Hope and Humanity

Amid the devastating floods that struck Assam in May 2022, affecting 29 districts and displacing thousands of families, the Guwahati Gana Seva Society (GGSS) emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. With the relentless rains causing massive destruction to homes, roads, communication networks, and agricultural lands, the essential needs for food, shelter, and healthcare became critical concerns for the flood-affected families.

In response to this crisis, GGSS, within the Archdiocese of Guwahati, launched an emergency humanitarian relief initiative to support those in distress. Through generous financial assistance from international donors like Manos Unidas (Spain), Catholic Relief Service (US), Taizé Brothers (France), and local supporters such as the Guwahati Archdiocese and various religious institutes, GGSS raised a total of Rs. 1,49,86,435.40 to combat the effects of the floods.

GGSS provided immediate relief to approximately 27,000 individuals (5817 flood affected families) by distributing dry rations and sanitary kits to 4904 families in remote villages across Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, Baksa, Kamrup Rural, and Kamrup Metro districts. To address urgent healthcare needs, eight free medical camps were organized with the support of the Camillian Task Force and St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore. These camps offered free treatment and medicines to 940 patients.

In addition to the on-ground relief efforts, GGSS supported 913 flood-affected families with unconditional cash transfers of Rs. 6299 each, enabling them to meet their immediate and diverse needs. Furthermore, 43 households that suffered severe damage to their homes received an additional Rs. 10,000 each for necessary repairs. This collaborative effort not only alleviated immediate suffering but also restored a sense of security and hope to the people of Assam. GGSS’s compassionate and organized approach to disaster relief stands as a testament to the power of community, generosity, and humanitarian spirit in times of crisis.
