The Phase-II (3-year) Project on Ecological Hostel and Kitchen Garden, implemented by the applicant organization, aimed to enhance children's learning on organic farming and its health benefits. As a continuation of Phase-I, the project expanded its reach from 12 to 26 hostels within the Diocese of Guwahati, India. The project intervention has been designed to be implemented from January 2019 to February 2022.
The project focused on developing organic kitchen gardens in each hostel, enabling children to engage in sustainable farming practices. Key activities included:
• Organic farm development in all targeted hostels
• School-level awareness workshops on organic farming promotion
• Hostel-level training and demonstrations on organic farming techniques
• Practical sessions on plastic mulching and vermicomposting
• Distribution of IEC materials (posters, pamphlets)
• Quiz and poster-making competitions on food security and organic farming
• Exposure visits to local organic farms/Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)
The project yielded significant learning outcomes, fostering children's understanding of chemical-free farming, bio-pesticides, and sustainable agricultural practices. An external evaluation confirmed the positive impact of the initiative, highlighting children's active participation, the quality of organic produce, and their growing awareness of environmental sustainability.
