The "Strengthening Disaster Resilience and Community Preparedness on DRR in 13 Vulnerable Villages of Morigaon District of Assam" project is a community-driven Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiative aimed at fostering resilience among marginalized and disaster-prone communities. It seeks to shift mindsets at individual, family, and institutional levels, encouraging proactive disaster preparedness and response. The project focuses on capacity-building to reduce vulnerabilities, particularly in flood-affected areas, by enhancing community participation in decision-making and mainstream development processes. Additionally, it emphasizes sustainable livelihoods strategies, protection, and recovery measures, ensuring that vulnerable populations can effectively manage and mitigate the impact of disasters while securing their long-term well-being. Hence, the project spans July 2023 – June 2025 and focuses on disaster risk reduction (DRR) through capacity building, community preparedness, and sustainable livelihood strategies.

Project Location Overview
The project is located in Assam’s Morigaon district, specifically within the Mayong and Laharighat blocks. It covers five panchayats—Niz-Saharia, Boralimari, Gormari, Ghogua and Ghagolmari Asighar—encompassing 13 villages with a total population of 8,198 individuals across 1,167 families.

This region is characterized by rural and agrarian livelihoods, with communities largely engaged in farming, fishing, and small-scale trade. Morigaon is also known for its flood-prone geography, leading to seasonal displacement and economic vulnerability. The area has a diverse socio-economic fabric, with many families relying on government welfare schemes and community-based support systems.

Key Implementation Strategies:

 Community Organization & Capacity Building
• Formation of functional task force groups addressing identified DRR needs.
• Strengthening community participation in decision-making and governance structures.
• Establishing linkages with government line departments.
 Disaster Resilience & Preparedness
• Promoting risk reduction measures at individual, family, and community levels.
• Training communities in preventive and mitigative actions to reduce disaster impacts.
• Enhancing early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms.
 Sustainable Livelihood & Risk Mitigation
• Supporting alternative and disaster-resilient livelihoods to reduce economic vulnerability.
• Promoting climate-adaptive agricultural practices and income diversification.
• Strengthening protection and recovery measures during and after disasters.

 Expected Outcomes:
• Improved community preparedness and resilience to floods and other natural calamities.
• Reduced vulnerability and disaster impact on lives, livelihoods, and properties.
• Enhanced engagement of marginalized communities in disaster management planning and decision-making.

This project empowers 8,198 people from 1,167 families by fostering self-reliance, community preparedness, and sustainable risk reduction practices, ensuring long-term disaster resilience in Morigaon’s flood-prone areas.
