The Shelter: Tribal Widows’ Programme in Goalpara District of Assam (Phase – I) was a pilot initiative implemented by Guwahati Gana Seva Society (GGSS), with support from Manos Unidas, Spain. It aimed at empowering 103 poor widows from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in 15 villages of Balijana Block, Goalpara District, Assam. The project sought to enhance the socio-economic well-being of widows through integrated development interventions. The development project activities are designed to be achieved within the period of two years (October 2019 – September 2021)
This developmental project focused on the integrated socio-economic upliftment of the widows by:
Creating awareness about their rights and available opportunities.
Providing skill development training in viable income-generating activities.
Imparting knowledge on various government schemes for their welfare.
Enhancing economic self-sufficiency through sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Empowering them to manage their families with dignity and independence.
Providing training on household and financial management, nutrition, human rights, and savings habits.
By equipping widows with knowledge, skills, and resources, and trough structured training programs and income-generation activities, the project aimed to enable them to achieve economic self-sufficiency and social dignity, ensuring a better future for themselves and their families.
