Phase - IV: Community Action for Water, Sanitation, and Nutrition in North East India

Image

The Community Action for Water, Sanitation, and Nutrition project, implemented by GGSS in collaboration with NEDSSS and its partners, focuses on reducing diarrhea, improving nutrition, and promoting hygiene and sanitation among pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five in 254 remote villages across Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram. Due to the remoteness and socio-political challenges, government health services remain inadequate in these regions, necessitating community-led interventions to improve overall health outcomes. The project intervention duration is from October 2019 to September 2022.

Key Objectives and Activities:
• Promotion of Hygiene & Sanitation:
• Monthly handwashing demonstrations in schools, Anganwadis, health centers, and high schools using videos in local languages.
• Training sessions on the correct use of soap and water for children, mothers, and caregivers.
• Reinforcement of hygiene messages during home visits by health workers and ASHAs.
• Nutrition Enhancement & Food Security:
• Community-led demonstrations on preparing balanced energy food and weaning diets at Village levels, Anganwadis, high schools, health centers, and churches etc.
• Regular healthcare awareness sessions during home visits by health workers.

By leveraging participatory approaches and community engagement, GGSS and its partners strive to foster long-term behavioural change and improve primary healthcare access in some of the most underserved areas of North East India.
