Guwahati Gana Seva Society (GGSS), under the FARM Northeast - Phase II initiative, has undertaken the important task of identifying and documenting indigenous seeds with the active participation of local farmers from 15 villages in the Dimoria block of Kamrup Metro district, Assam. This booklet, Indigenous Seeds, is a step towards preserving and promoting traditional seed varieties that are increasingly being replaced by high-yielding commercial alternatives.
Indigenous seeds are not just the foundation of sustainable farming but also a key element of food sovereignty. Farmers who cultivate using these seeds maintain independence from external seed sources, ensuring greater resilience in their agricultural practices. Additionally, food grown from indigenous seeds has long been a part of our cultural heritage, offering nutritional benefits and reinforcing a deep connection to our land and traditions.
Through this booklet, GGSS aims to encourage farmers to continue cultivating indigenous seed varieties, safeguarding them from extinction and strengthening local food systems. By doing so, GGSS wants that the village farmers uphold the wisdom of generations and protect a vital resource for the future.
