The Farmer’s Handbook on Vermicomposting is a practical guide designed to empower farmers in flood-prone areas of Morigaon district of Assam with a sustainable alternative livelihood. Developed by Guwahati Gana Seva Society (GGSS) under the project “Global Program India”, this handbook is a step toward building resilience among vulnerable farming communities affected by recurrent floods.
In Assam’s Morigaon district, unpredictable monsoon floods frequently disrupt agricultural activities, leading to crop failures and economic hardships. Recognizing this challenge, GGSS introduced an innovative, raised-platform vermicomposting model—a solution that allows farmers to continue generating income despite adverse conditions. Initially piloted among 20 farmers, this initiative has demonstrated its potential as a sustainable, flood-resilient livelihood alternative.
This handbook serves as a comprehensive resource to help farmers adopt vermicomposting, providing step-by-step guidance on its implementation and benefits. By equipping farmers with practical knowledge, the handbook aims to enhance financial stability, improve soil health, and promote environmentally friendly farming practices. It is our hope that this resource will enable more farmers to embrace vermicomposting as a means of securing their livelihoods even in the face of natural adversities.
